When one thinks elegance, style and grace in regards to an automobile, Rolls Royce will be top of mind. Favored by aristocracy and celebrity alike, the Rolls Royce symbolizes achievement and privilege. Chauffeured or self-driven, ownership of a Rolls Royce tells the world you have arrived.
The best selling model in Rolls Royce history was The Shadow. This vehicle was produced and sold from 1965 to 1980. For such a costly automobile, having built 38,000 was an amazing achievement for the company. It was the first of their cars to use what is called "monocoque" construction, literally meaning single shell. This same concept, sometimes referred to as structural skin, was used in early aircraft manufacturing.
The Rolls Royce Silver Spirit represented a brand new generation. It entered into production in 1980 and continued through 1989. With the base of the famous Silver Shadow, this prestigious vehicle was dressed up in a more modern, elegant body. Produced at the same time was The Rolls Royce Silver Spur which added a longer wheelbase - four inches - to that of the Spirit.
Led by the famous "Spirit of Ecstasy" hood ornament, called "The Flying Lady" in North America, the Rolls Royce Silver Spur was also built as a limousine. Produced between 1982 and 1999, it was stretched by approximately 42 inches. A 1990 Rolls Royce Silver Spur II Touring Limousine may be going up on the auction block with Julien's in the very near future. Its famous and discerning owner? None other than Michael Jackson. |
